BJP candidate confident of winning Gangtok bypoll

By A CORRESPONDENT

GANGTOK, Oct 16 - Senior BJP leader and candidate of the SKM-BJP combine for the Gangtok Assembly constituency, YT Lepcha, today exuded confidence that the people of the State capital would steer him to a historic win in the upcoming bypoll.

Bypolls to three Assembly constituencies Poklok Kamrang, Gangtok and Martam Rumtek are being viewed as an acid test for the SKM-BJP alliance, with the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) conceding two of the three seats to the BJP.

The national parties have fared poorly in the political landscape of Sikkim, which has been dominated by the regional parties. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Government led by Pawan Chamling ruled the State for 25 years before it was ousted from power in May this year.

Lepcha lashed out at the Opposition parties for fanning unwarranted fear among the people on the fate of Article 371(F), which provides a special status to Sikkim. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has already assured the people that the Centre would not interfere with Article 371F.

Lepcha said that the BJPs victory in Gangtok and Rumtek constituencies would ensure fulfilment of all pending demands of the State by the Centre.
