BJP bid to form govt in Arunachal

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Jan 6 - As the political crisis deepened in Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP has stepped up its initiative to form what they hope would be the first BJP Government in the North-east, highly placed sources said.

Sources said that BJP is in close touch with the rebel MLAs, including those 14 MLAs whose suspension from the State Assembly was stayed by the Gauhati High Court yesterday.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was in Assam, was reportedly briefed about the political developments in Arunachal Pradesh and he is said to have discussed the crisis with a few BJP leaders.

The development came a day after Gauhati High Court stayed the order of disqualification of 14 MLAs of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly passed on December 15 by the Assembly Speaker.

Altogether 33 members in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elected Kalikho Pul as the new Chief Minister of the State. Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and his 26 supporting MLAs boycotted that proceedings, terming them as illegal and unconstitutional. At least 20 legislators, including Pul, are rebel Congress MLAs.

The writ petition was filed by Pema Khandu and 13 other Congress MLAs, who were disqualified by the Speaker under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.

It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Nabam Tuki had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening to lodge a complaint against Governor JP Rajkhowa.

Sources said that the Prime Minister was sympathetic towards the Chief Minister and said that he would enquire into the whole matter and take suitable decisions pertaining to the same. Modi also assured him that a team would be deputed soon to visit the State.

Tuki also complained to the Prime Minister about the Governors tacit role in fuelling dissidence within the ruling Congress party in the State since Rajkhowa took over charge, a Government communique said. The Chief Minister further alleged that Rajkhowas conduct was in violation of the principles of cooperative federalism as espoused by the Prime Minister after the NDA came to power, the release said.

The Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister for expediting establishment of a greenfield airport at Hollongi, establishment of a Disaster Response Force battalion in the State, establishment of High Court in the State and East-West Industrial Corridor for border areas.
