BJP bandh hits life in Cachar, 20 arrested

SILCHAR, Oct 20 � Normal life was affected as the 12-hour bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party Cachar district unit today evoked total response across the district.

The BJP called the bandh protesting the deteriorating law-and-order situation and frequent incidents of molestation in the district.

As many as 20 persons have been arrested so far for allegedly breaching peace during the bandh. According to police, some people tried to oppose the bandh at Gopal Ganj, which resulted in chaos after the picketers reacted with aggression. Many of the picketers were also arrested.

Additional Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Rajveer Singh said that to disperse the protesters and agitators the police had to blank fire three rounds of rubber bullets.
