BJP bags two constituencies in Manipur

IMPHAL, Nov 10 - The ruling BJP has won two seats and was leading in another constituency in the bypolls held on Saturday last. In the results declared so far after counting of votes today, BJP candidate Oinam Lukhoi Singh emerged victorious in the Wangoi Assembly constituency. He defeated his nearest rival, Khuraijam Loken Singh of the National People�s Party (NPP), by 257 votes. Lukhoi Singh got 10,960 votes, while Loken Singh secured 10,703 votes.

Congress candidate Salam Joy Singh bagged the third position by bagging 5,591 votes.

On the other hand, BJP candidate Paonam Brojen won the Wangjing Tentha seat, defeating his Congress rival, M Hemanta. Brojen secured 15,321 votes, while Hemanta got 13,808 votes.

BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip was leading his lone rival, Lamtinthang Haokip of the Congress, by more than 12,000 votes, till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, the Lilong seat went to Independent candidate Y Antas Khan who defeated Md Abdul Nasir, another Independent who was supported by the ruling front. Khan bagged 17,106 votes, while Nasir bagged 14,028 votes.

By-elections to four Assembly constituencies � Lilong, Wangoi, Wangjing-Tentha and Saitu in Manipur, in which 11 candidates were in fray � were necessitated after their respective MLAs resigned from the Assembly in August this year.

BJP candidate Ginsuanhau was elected unopposed from the Singhat Assembly constituency last month after his rival withdrew his nomination papers.

The BJP-led Government in the State is being supported by four MLAs each of the NPP and the Naga People�s Front, one each of All India Trinamool Congress and Lok Janshakti Party, one Independent and one unattached member.

Earlier, BJP candidate Mayanglangbam Rameshwar, who had secured the second place in the 2017 Assembly polls, was sworn in as an MLA after the election of Congress candidate Y Surchandra from the same constituency was declared null and void by the High Court.

The present strength of the 60-member Manipur Assembly now stands at 53.
