NEW DELHI, May 5 - The BJP today urged the Centre to take immediate steps to curb smuggling from across the border to Assam.
Moving a notice under Rule 377 in Lok Sabha, BJP MP Ramen Deka reminded the NDA government that infiltration is a major issue in Assam and due to infiltration from East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, the very existence of the indigenous people of the State is under threat.
Infiltration will change the demography of Assam. Besides all kinds of misdeeds happen due to infiltrators, including smuggling, law and order problems and above all arms smuggling, Deka said.
I would like to urge the Government of India to take urgent steps to stop smuggling. If infiltration is not stopped forthwith and the foreigners are not detected and deported, the political power will be snatched from indigenous people by the illegal aliens, he said.
Referring to the National Register of Citizenship (NRC), he said it was prepared under special circumstances to keep away foreigners from voters list, so that they can be detected and deported.
I would like to know from the Central government, the progress of the NRC in Assam, including the status of Hindu refugees, he said.
