Bisons from Manas create panic, 5 hurt

PATACHARKUCHI, June 11 - Four bisons came out from the Manas National Park yesterday and created panic in the bordering areas of Manas under Barpeta district and Baksa districts. Five people, including one forest employee, were also injured by them. After a long effort of the Forest department and NGOs of the area, two out of the four were tranquilised, one is hiding and another one is suspected to have returned back to Manas National Park.

According to reports, the bisons have created terror and disruption in the villages roaming on the roads and injuring people. People have reportedly seen these animals in the villages of Shukilapara and Botiyamari in Bajali subdivision of Barpeta district and Sastar of Baska district. The bison roaming in Sastar has been tranquilised by the forest officials and members of the Mauzigendri Eco Tourism Society anong with public and NGO. The forest officials from Bhuyanpara range and Bahbari range, police and CRPF personnel are constantly trying to push back the animals to the forest. Those injured by the bisons are Kalicharan Kalita (50), Tarani Kalita (48), Sanatan Kalita (40) and Rajnath Kalita.�Out of them, the condition of Kalicharan Kalita and Rajnath Kalita is reportedly serious and they have been referred to the Barpeta Medical College. One forest personnel named Lachit was injured in Sastar village while trying to control the animals. According to forest officials, these months are the mating season for the bisons and it is possible that the animals have come this far for mating.
