DHEMAJI, Aug 29 - The birth centenary of Tanka Bora, a noted freedom fighter of Dhemaji, was observed on Thursday at his residence at Jamuguri Konchgaon under the aegis of the Assam State Freedom Fighters� Sanmilan.
The ceremony began with lighting of 100 earthen lamps. The programme was initiated by Naba Saikia, secretary of the Dhemaji District Freedom Fighters� Sanmilan, and was attended by MLA Dr Ranoj Pegu, SP Dr Dhananjay Ghanawat, Assam State Freedom Fighters� Sanmilan secretary Dhiren Chetia, litterateur Umesh Chetia, AASU vice president Chittaranjan Basumatary, Belguri Satra�s satradhikar Munindra Narayan Goswami, Dhemaji District Journalists� Association president Ashwini Kumar Dowarah and secretary Bhaskar Sabhapandit and Dhemaji Press Club president Premananda Talukdar. They felicitated the freedom fighter with a gamosa, cheleng chadar, dhuti-panjabi, sarai and citation.
Dhemaji Zila Parishad CEO Prafulla Kumar Deori who is also the Deputy Commissioner in charge, presented Rs 50,000 to the freedom fighter on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and also cut a cake on the occasion.
Tanka Bora was imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle and also played a vital role in the Assam Agitation in 1983. He also lost his youngest son Kamala Bora in police firing during the Assam Agitation.
