Birth anniversary of Sankardev at Sualkuchi

SUALKUCHI, Oct 24 � The 562nd birth anniversary of Srimanta Sankardev, one of the pioneers of the Indian Bhakti Movement, was celebrated at Sualkuchi with a four day programme recently.

Under the aegis of the Mahapurushiya Dharmalochani Sabha, the Janmostav was celebrated at Sri Sri Sankardev Mandir, a religious centre of the Vaishnavite community. The celebration began with the Usha Kirtan by a group of people who proceeded through the main streets of the village. A proccession comprising school students along with gayan bayan was taken out through the main thoroughfares.

The �Bhaona Pradarshan� programme later started. At least five different groups of artistes staged �Bhaona� at different places in the village. The Krishti Bikash Kendra of Sri Sri Sankardev Mandir, Sri Sri Sankardev Dhama, Chhawal Krishna Krishti Centre, Sudarshout Natya Gosthi and Iswar Sri Sri Borsatra staged �Bhawna� at various public places.

In the evening the people of the village illuminated earthen lamps on the plantain trees erected at the gateway to each household. The Bhagawat Shobhajatra started in the evening to mark the eve of the birth anniversary. The Ankiya Naat was staged at night.

On the second day, the programme started with naam prasanga by women which was followed by the flag hoisting by Dr Mahesh Baishya, president, Mahapurushiya Dharmalochani Sabha. The most fascinating programme was the naam prasanga performed by the Vaishnavite people who marched on the streets and blessed the people at their gateways. In the afternoon, the Borgeet competition was held on the mandir premises. The Kansah Badh the ankiya drama was staged at night. The drama was directed by Bhagneswar Das and Pankaj Bharali.

Besides some religious functions, the religious discourse was held in the afternoon. The discourse was chaired by Dr Mahesh Baishya, president of Mahapurushiya Dharmalochani Sabha, was attended by Jogendra Nath Baruah as the key speaker of the meeting. The cultural show was held in the evening of that day.

On the concluding day of the celebration, a discourse on the significance of the Bhagawat was held in the afternoon. The seminar was conducted by Lohit Kakati, president, publicity wing of the Mahapurushiya Dharmalochani Sabha and attended by Devraj Sapkota, distinguished Nepali writer and Arati Deka, noted womens� writer as the appointed speakers.
