Biraj Sarma passes away

GUWAHATI, Jan 16 - The mortal remains of senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader and one of the signatories of the historic Assam Accord, Biraj Kumar Sarma, were today consigned to flames at the Navagraha cremation ground here with state honours.

Sarma, 70, passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital. He was serving as the vice president of the AGP.

Sarma was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly for two terms (1985 and 1996) from the East Guwahati constituency and held several important ministerial portfolios in both the regimes of the AGP under the then Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

Earlier today, mortal remains of Sarma were taken out from his Rajgarh residence to Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilni, AGP headquarters and then to Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir where floral tributes were paid to the departed soul by colleagues and admirers.

AASU chief adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya visited Sarma�s Rajgarh residence and expressed his condolence to the bereaved family members.

Among those who paid tributes at the AGP headquarters include former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, AGP president Atul Bora and senior leaders Phani Bhusan Choudhury and Ramendra Narayan Kalita, among others.

After passing out from Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School, Sarma did his graduation from Cotton College. During the Assam Agitation, he had served as the convenor of the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad.

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior BJP leaders Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chandra Mohan Patowary have condoled the demise of Sarma.

Several organisations, including Pragjyoti Communications, also expressed their condolence.
