Bimalapur tense over vandalism by Arunachalis

By Correspondent

SONARI, Aug 14 A tense situation prevails at Bimalapur under Charaipung police station in Charaideo subdivision along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border following the illegal entry of a group of about 50 Arunachali men at around 2.30 am today. The group reportedly burnt down the under-construction building of the Charaipung police station.

The miscreants also damaged the houses of Debnath Saha and Bhakta Bahadur Subba, assaulted Debnath (45) and his wife Ramani Devi (40) and burnt all the belongings in the house. They also assaulted Raju Subba (26), Bhakta Bahadur Subba, his wife Dilkumari and son Sambhu and burnt down all the belongings in the house.

It may be mentioned here that the Assam Government declared the Charaipung out-post as a full-fledged police station last year to check the illegal activities and encroachment by Arunachali residents. Since then the people of the neighbouring State have been opposing the establishment of the full-fledged police station at Chraipung, claiming the area to be their own. The miscreants also hung a board, claiming the entire Lahdoigarh area as Arunachal Pradesh land.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner NM Hussain, Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Singh visited the border area and assured full protection to the people of Bimalapur. The DC of Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh also visited the area. He was gheraoed by the local people who demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants involved in the vandalism.
