JORHAT, May 17 - Incidents of snatching of money and mobile handsets have been on the rise in and around Jorhat town, and another such incident of snatching a bag of cash was reported on Thursday.

This is the fourth major incident of snatching of a bag of cash by motorbike-borne youths in a month within the town area.

As per a complaint lodged at the Jorhat Police Station by Bhaben Bora from Pulibor on the outskirts of Jorhat, two youths on a motorbike snatched a bag containing Rs 40,000 in cash at the busy Nirmal Sari-Ali area of AT Road on Thursday afternoon and fled. Bora was walking on the road when the incident occurred.

Jorhat Police Station officer-in-charge Ranjit Chetia said that investigation was on in the case. However, he said that when he talked to Bora, he said that he was not sure about the amount of money inside the bag and presumed to be about Rs 20,000.

The officer-in-charge said that police in the past one month arrested over 20 persons reportedly involved in cases of snatching of cash, mobile phones and theft of two-wheelers.

However, new cases have been reported indicating more people from different gangs were operating and efforts were on to nab them, Chetia said.

The official said that five people with arms too have been arrested recently. Chetia stated that on Monday, two persons one from Dergaon and another from Borigaon locality here were arrested and two stolen mobile handsets which cost about Rs 26,000, were recovered from their possession.
