Bijoya Dashami marks end of Durga Puja

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - The five-day-long Durga Puja festival, celebrated across the length and breadth of the State with much zeal and fervour, came to an end today with the observation of Bijoya Dashami.

The celebration had reached its crescendo on both Astami and Navami that witnessed thousands of people thronging the puja pandals where idols of the Goddess were installed for the devotees to pay obeisance to the goddess of power, which also epitomizes victory of good over evil.

Like in previous years, this year too, theme-based pandals turned out to be major crowd-pullers. From depicting the Chandrayaan II mission to raising awareness on environmental issues and disseminating eco-friendly messages, Guwahatians were a witness to a wide range of theme-based celebrations.

Dressed in their best, people were seen exchanging gifts and sweets and joined in the festivities.

The festivity reached its climax today as devotees bid a tearful adieu to the Goddess and her children. As part of the Dashami rituals, married women were smearing vermilion on each others faces.

Elaborate security arrangements were made across the State to make the entire festival incident-free.

In Guwahati, where around 500 pandals were erected, special traffic arrangements were put in place to ensure smooth movement of vehicular traffic.

The idols were immersed at different water bodies across the State under elaborate security arrangements. The idols were carried for immersion through colourful processions.

In Guwahati, immersions were allowed at five locations Sunsali, Kasomari, Pandu, Basistha and Saukuchi. Besides, Azara, Chandrapur and Sonapur were other notified locations where immersion was carried out.

The immersion rituals in some ghats will continue till tomorrow.

Meanwhile, apart from two fatal late night accidents at Six Mile and Khanapara that killed three bikers, no major untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the city.
