Bihu committees gearing up for grand show

GUWAHATI, April 10 - With Rongali Bihu festivities round the corner, the Bihu committees of the city are getting ready to put up a grand show and attract maximum number of Bihu revellers. The occasion also provides a platform to budding performing artistes to showcase their talent through various competitions.

The Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani of Latasil, celebrating its 65th year, would organize several programmes from April 13 to 16. Eminent actress Gyanada Kakati would inaugurate the cultural evening. Bihu Husori and Mukoli Bihu of different ethnic communities would be held on April 13 along with Diha Naam competition, while Dhuliya circus would be held along with the folk dances of Bodo, Nepali, Hajong and Karbi communities.

On April 14, Jeng Bihu competition, Deodhoni dance, Husori and programmes by child artistes would be held. People will also be able to enjoy popular singer Zubeen Garg�s performance on the same day.

The �Bihu Konwari� and �Bihu Rani� competitions would be held on April 15 followed by presentation of Mising Bihu, Deuri Bihu and other programmes. A number of other competitions among the youth would be held on the same day. Eminent danseuse Indira PP Bora and singer Rupam Talukdar would also perform on April 15.

A marathon would be organized on April 16, followed by prize distribution of the competitions and several other programmes.

In keeping with the tradition, the Pub Guwahati Bihu Sanmilan, Chandmari, would celebrate its 55th Bihu programme from April 13 to 16, with a number of competitions.

Along with the Bihu functions, the multi-ethnic cultural traditions of the State would also be showcased during the Bihu programmes.

The best Bihu Husori team and Assam Bihua competitions would be held on April 13, while the best Bihu Nasoni and best Bihu Dhuliya competitions would be organized on April 14, followed by Jeng Bihu and Assam Bihuwoti competition on April 15.

Cash awards for the Assam Bihuwoti competition is Rs 1,00,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 for the first three position holders, along with a gold crown for the Best Bihuwoti. The best three Husori teams would get cash prizes of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. There are cash awards for other competitions as well.

The Brihattar Bhetapara Rongali Bihu Sanmilan would celebrate its 21st programme on the Durga Mandir premises at Bhetapara on April 14 and 15. The programme would start with a cultural procession on April 14, to be followed by a number of cultural programmes and competitions among the youth. Social worker Minakanta Sarma would hoist the Bihu flag. Performance by singer Astharupa would be a special attraction of the day. On April 15, quiz and �Go as you like� competitions would be held. A musical programme by Ankita Deka and Mousam Gogoi would be another attraction.
