Bihu celebrated in Houston

GUWAHATI, May 19 � The Assamese community of Houston celebrated Rongali Bihu with great enthusiasm recently. The day began with flag hoisting, breakfast with chira doi and �pitha pona� contest, sports for children and adults, barbeque lunch and prize distribution at a local park, a release received here stated.

The evening programme began with a fashion show for the children from the age of one year to high school. All parents brought their children adorned with colourful costumes in Bihu spirit with great excitement. Trophies with Assamese Bihu dolls were presented to all the participants and was highly appreciated by everyone. Dinner was catered from a local Indian restaurant with Indian and Assamese delicacies.

Then the cultural programme began at a community hall with a one-minute silence observed in memory of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Dr Mamoni Goswami, Charu Gohain and Tulika Senapati. Immediately after, a video presentation was given by astronaut Mike Fincke about post flight STS-134, which kept the audience spellbound.

This was followed by a variety performance with children and adults featuring chorus, Bihu dance, Jhumur dance, Kathak dance, children�s husori, songs, borgeet, khol performance, fusion dance by Runmee Barbara, violin recital by Rheeturaj Das, piano recital by Arijit Bhuyan, Ragini Das�s Kathak dance, Sophia Baruah�s Bharat Natyam dance and instrumemtal performance by Meera & Prahlad Das were among the most applauded items .The programme ended with mukoli bihu.
