BIEO raids cooperatives

GUWAHATI, Aug 12 - Acting on tip-offs, joint teams of BIEO and Food and Civil Supplies Department conducted raids at several cooperative societies and have detected anomalies in the public distribution system.

�On August 10, a team of BIEO officials raided a godown at Borbala under Howly police station and seized as many as 186 bags of suspected PDS rice, electronic weighing machines, bag closures, FCI marked stickers and empty yellow coloured plastic bags.

As per information received, the building was being used to keep unauthorized FCI rice bags meant to be sold in the open market by repacking,� a BIEO official said.

The suspected accused persons - Sahidul Islam and Maznur Ali and owner of the godown are absconding.

BIEO officials have also made surprise visits to Gagalmari Gaon Panchayat Samabay Samiti in Morigaon, Sontali GPSS in Kamrup and Doboka GPSS in Hojai and detected a lot of anomalies like non-maintenance of daily stock and sale registers relating to PDS/TPDS articles, duplication of names of beneficiaries in the list of schemes under NFSA, noncompliance of allotment orders of PDS/TPDS articles made by the government, anomalies in the distribution of rice under mid-day meal scheme, bogus beneficiaries, misappropriation of huge quantities of PDS rice etc.

�For example, at Doboka we detected over 850 duplicate names in the beneficiary list. Also, 310 mid-day meal rice mismatch was detected,� the official said, adding that 23 agents have been summoned for questioning.

The BIEO has given separate reports on the raids to the respective Deputy Commissioners who are also likely to conduct independent inquiries.

A case is likely to be registered soon and the ambit of inquiry expanded to unearth the anomalies.
