Bid to promote Assam as a tourism hub

GUWAHATI, March 25 � Trend MMS, a sociocultural organisation, with support from the Assam Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department and the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs is organising a three-day function titled �Rongali� in the Khanapara Veterinary College field from April 3 to promote Assam as a tourism destination.

Rongali would showcase the way of life of various tribes and communities of Assam, their culture, handloom and handicraft, tourism destinations, etc. Three evenings of scintillating music by Angarag Papon Mahanta, Zubeen Garg, Simanta Sekhar, Babu, Priyanka Bharali and others, would showcase the best musicians of the State. Karbi rockstar Phu Ning Ding, Mising Queen Tarulota Kutum, Sajan Nayak, India�s top rock bands, like Girish & the Chronicles, Indian Ocean, etc., would perform on the occasion.

Rongali would showcase an exhibition of �Historical Trail of Assam� which will trace Assam�s history from Bhagadutta�s time to Bhupen Hazarika�s days. The trail would include Burman dynasty, Su Ka Pha, Ajan Pir, Sankaradeva, up to Bhupen Hazarika and aim at educating students about the glorious history of Assam.

Innovator Uddhab Bharali would showcase unique innovations by Assamese entrepreneurs. Fire cracker industry of Barpeta, bell metal of Sarthebari, musk making from Sivasagar, traditional jewellery of Nagaon, magic of Mayong, water hyacinth products, cane furniture and food products would be on display.

Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of Rongali, informed that the Union Ministry of Tourism has sponsored 40 tour operators/travel writers across India to visit Rongali.

Spicejet is promoting Rongali in their boarding passes and their own magazines. Mahanta also informed that Rongali is an attempt to attract tourists to Assam during Bohag Bihu and a beginning is being made. Entry is free for the event, he added.
