GUWAHATI, Sept 14 � The fifth biennial conference of UBI Employees� Union held at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers recently resolved to resist what it said was the attempt on the part of the Government to privatise the public sector banks and financial institutions under the pretext of effecting financial reforms.
Speaking at the conference, Pranab Chattopadhyaya, leader of the Central Government Employees' Coordination Committee, West Bengal, gave a background of the designs of the Government to undo the good sought to be achieved from nationalisation of the country's banks four decades back.
Pointing out that the nationalised banks - free from unwarranted hold and control of big business houses and corporates had been playing a key role in uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the masses, Chattopadhyaya said that the present Central Government �true to its commitment to big business houses and corporates � indigenous and foreign � was working overtime to reverse the course.�
�On specious pleas of financial sector reforms (an offshoot of the neo-liberal economic reforms programmes) dictated by the World Bank, IMF and WTO trio, nationalised banks � the solid foundation of the self-reliant economy of our country are being subjected to wanton loot and plunder by private monopoly capital,� he said.
Asserting that the bank employees would continue to put up a firm stand against the anti-people policies of the Government, Chattopadhyaya said that the 14 all-India strikes in the last two decades would testify to the commitment of the employees against such manouvres of the Government.
�All these anti-employee and anti-national moves aimed at privatisation of PSU banks and financial institutions will be foiled by the united movement of the working people,� Chattopadhyaya said.
Earlier, the inaugural session of the conference was formally opened by Sukhomoy Sarkar, general secretary, central executive committee, a press release said. The conference was attended by leaders of various trade union organisations.
The delegates' session was attended by representatives of the entire Central Assam region. Several resolutions were passed in the meet.
