NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 11 � Thousands of people offered their tributes as the ashes of the thespian of modern Assamese music and culture, Dr Bhupen Hazarika reached North Lakhimpur on Thursday morning.
People from all walks of life stood in long queues to offer their last respect to the ashes of the legendary artist who was cremated with full official honours on Wednesday in Jalukbari, Guwahati.
Meanwhile, a public organization has been formed in North Lakhimpur to preserve the heritage of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and commemorate his works. The organisation, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Smritirakshya Samitee, Lakhimpur was formed in North Lakhimpur to establish a public hall as Bhupendra Bhawan and to install a lifesize statue of Dr Hazarika at Jateeya Veerbhoomi, North Lakhimpur, a commemorative site where statue of Siu-Ka-Pha, Lachit Borphookan and others are already installed. The public body wasformed with Maj. Nripen Phookan as the president, Aroop Borah as working president and Khagen Gogoi, Nabiul Islam, Suresh Gogoi and Sazzad Hussain secretaries.
The public body will work in association with Uttar Lakhimpur Sahitya Sabha for the completion of the proposed work to commemorate Dr Bhupen Hazarika which is expected to be completed by December, 2011.
The already existing Kristi Bhawan, whose foundation stone was laid in 1965 by Dr Bhupen Hzarika near the North Lakhimpur town Naamghar in Ward No. 6 of the town and which was completed with MP fund money and inaugurated in 2003 by then Lakhimpur MP, Ranee Narah will be given a facelift as designed by noted artiste Nuruddin Ahmed and converted to a state of the art auditorium as Bhupendra Bhawan.
