Bid to popularise Khadi as an all-season fabric

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 28 Bringing the sophisticated and trendy Khadi outfits on the ramp, with an aim to popularize it as a 21st century fabric, noted fashion designer Prasantt Ghosh in association with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, organized a Khadi fashion show in the city on Saturday.

Preferring the branded outfits over the indigenous fabrics, we are gradually forgetting our very own Khadi, which can be far more comfortable and trendy. I have tried to change the conception that Khadi is only for the politicians or the elders, Ghosh told The Assam Tribune.

Apart from being sophisticated, Khadi is also associated with the freedom movement of India. We have witnessed the evolution of this textile since time immemorial. Over the years, different types of fibres have been used for preparing fabrics like cotton, linen, wool and silk. But Khadi is the only fibre with qualities such as flexibility, strength and elasticity, said Prasantt Ghosh.

Khadi is unique in the sense that it is for all seasons, he further added.

But he also regretted the fact that though Khadi has these unique features, the true potential of the fabric has still not been tapped, both from the industry as well as the commercial angle.

Referring to Khadi as one of the most versatile fabrics, Ghosh said that it is comfortable to wear it in the climate of North East India. Since casual outfits are now in trend, Khadi offers both style and comfort together. If embellished properly, it can even be the part of a wedding trousseau. In fashion world, Khadi is not only the mainstay fabric in India, it is the most comfortable outfit in the summers, he said.
