Bid to misinterpret Malik�s poem deplored

JORHAT, April 24 - The Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat, Jorhat unit of AASU and the students� union of Jagannath Barooah college, has demanded appropriate legal action to be taken under law against people who reportedly have spread communal hatred on social media by quoting a few stanzas of the poem Moi Asomiya, penned by legendary Assamese literrateur Late Syed Abdul Malik, a Padma Bhushan awardee and a former Asam Sahitya Sabha president.

A press note issued by the Jorhat district unit AASU assistant general secretary and also the advisor of the Jorhat regional unit of the students� body, Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi stated that it has come to the notice of students� organisation that an unscrupulous person was trying to spread communal hatred in the society by misinterpreting a few stanzas of the famous poem (Moi Asomiya) of Syed Abdul Malik, one the great literary figures of Assamese literature, by uploading a few lines of the said poem in the social media.

The note said that several persons too have posted highly objectionable and hate-mongering comments on the said post which was a crime under law for trying to foment communal hatred among the public.

He said that the AASU unit of Jagannath Barooah College, the students� union body of the college and Jorhat district unit of AASU, while condemning the act of defaming the great icon of Assamese society ( Syed Abdul Malik), also a former teacher of Jagannath College, and trying to fan communal hatred, has demanded strong legal action against the persons involved in the despicable act, the note mentioned.

The note stated that a delegation of Jorhat district unit AASU along with the students� union body and college unit of AASU of Jagannath Barooah College submitted a memorandum to the Jorhat Superintendent of Police seeking an investigation into the matter immediately and thereafter taking prompt and strong action under the law against those found to be involved in the act.

Excise personnel drive: Meanwhile, in a drive against illicit liquor by State Excise department staff on Wednesday at areas of Boloma Tea Estate and Teok Pirakata under Teok Revenue Circle, 35 litres of sulai (Illicit liquor), 440 litres of raw materials kept to prepare sulai and a few instruments used to prepare the brew were seized and destroyed on the spot.

A district administration official informed that one person was arrested under State Excise law on charges of producing the illicit liquor.
