Bid to free encroached sattra land

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 21 The Bharatiya Janata Yuba Morcha (BJYM), Assam Pradesh has embarked on a mission to promote the teachings of the Vaishnavite saints and to free the Sattras from the encroachment of illegal Bangladeshis.

The BJYM has conducted a survey on the recent status of the Sattras in the State and its findings say that out of the 910 Sattras, land of 26 Sattras measuring upto 5528 bighas have been encroached by illegal Bangladeshis.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, BJYM president Mriganka Barman said that the need of the hour was to free the Sattra land and he criticized the government for not implementing the High Court directive to protect and free the Sattra land.

We have decided to launch a State-wide movement to protect the Sattra land, informed Barman adding that the Sattras were symbolic of the rich cultural heritage of the State and ignoring the issue of rampant encroachment of Sattra land would be disastrous to the intellectual progress of the State.

It needs to be mentioned here that the BJYMs movement conceived as Borduwaloi Jao Balok would have a two pronged approach- to protest the indifference of the government towards the issue of encroachment of Sattra land and to popularize the Vaishnavite saints amongst the younger generation.

The movement would be launched on December 24 and would continue till March next year. The protest schedule will start with a visit to the Sattras by a delegation of the party, demonstrations and gherao of circle offices and offices of the deputy commissioners in the districts.

BJYM members will cover 500 kms on foot to reach Borduwa and we would welcome the support of other organizations as well, said Barman.

On the other hand, State BJP general secretary Pradyut Bora who was also present at the press conference said that the party was concentrating on giving an impetus to its policy of cultural nationalism and as part of that strategy it has undertaken a mission to revive the teachings of the Vaishnavite saints. To deal with the crisis of existentialism, the teachings of the saints have to be popularized amongst the young generation, he said.
