Bid to fast-track agri sector growth in State

GUWAHATI, June 28 - The Assam Agriculture Department and the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) today signed an 11-point declaration encompassing varied aspects concerning farmers and farming for propelling the agri sector into the fast-track growth path.

The declaration signed at Jorhat today envisages a joint mechanism involving agri officials and scientists of the department and the university and resolves, among other things, to double farmers� incomes by the year 2022.

The other objectives of the declaration include ensuring adequate remuneration for farmers, facilitating organic farming on a larger scale, taking technological interventions and research to the grassroots farmers, facilitating quality seeds and multiple cropping, and promoting cooperative farming and connecting farming and contact farming.

�We shall strive to promote excellence in agricultural practices by identifying appropriate areas for research and development by the AAU,� the declaration said.

The declaration has been signed by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, AAU Vice Chancellor Dr KM Buzarbaruah, Additional Chief Secretary and Agriculture Production Commissioner VS Bashkir, among others.

Speaking at the function held on the occasion at AAU campus, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora reiterated the Government's commitment in developing agriculture and ensuring fair prices for the tillers.
