Bhupendas death anniversary today

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 4 - On Thursday the people of Assam will observe the death anniversary of their beloved Bhupenda. As part of the observance, the State government is organising a tribute programme at the maestros Samadhi Kshetra at Jalukbari here. It will be attended by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The Samadhi Kshetra was developed by the State government to preserve the memory and works of Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The government has already spent a huge sum of money in developing the Samadhi Kshetra, which is now turning into a main attraction for tourists.

While everything else seems to be running smoothly for the maestros memorial, the condition of Dulal Talukdar, its caretaker since the monuments inception nine years back, does not at all look rosy. An ardent fan of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Talukdar is still waiting for regularisation of his job.

Talking to The Assam Tribune on Wednesday, Talukdar rued that even during the lockdown no one from the State government came forward to help him. Till date I have met a number of government officials and ministers along with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal with the request to regularise my job. Everyone assured me of help. But practically I have got nothing so far, Talukdar said.

The caretaker who is paid around Rs 11,000 per month, says that this amount is not enough to manage his four-member family. I am working here because as Bhupendas ardent fan, it is my moral duty look after the Samadhi Kshetra. I consider it as my home. But it is not easy to survive in the city with such a meagre salary, Talukdar rued.
