NEW DELHI, July 10 (PTI): Bhupen Hazarika, undergoing treatment at a Mumbai hospital since June 29, is stable now with his health improving and the legendary singer-composer is even enquiring about his musical instruments and songs.
Doctors are quite satisfied with the improvement that he has shown, a spokesperson of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where the 86-year-old Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner is admitted, said.
"His health has improved considerably since he was admitted to the ICU of our hospital after he complained of breathlessness and drowsiness. His vital organs are also functioning normally," the spokesperson said.
However, Hazarika is being nasal fed and a decision on shifting him to a room in the hospital is likely to be taken in two-three days.
He had a bypass surgery at the same hospital two years ago.
His long-time associate Kamal Kataki, who attended him in Mumbai, said the singer asked him about his songs and musical instruments.
"He asked me about his harmonium and songs," Kataki said.
The doyen of Assamese music had recently lent his voice to the film 'Gandhi To Hitler', where he sang Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan 'Vaishnav jan'.
Hazarika, who has a genius for weaving a magical tapestry out of traditional Assamese music and lyrics, is regarded as one of the greatest living cultural communicators of South Asia. He is considered as perhaps the only living balladeer in the country, composing his own lyrics and music.
He has been a poet, journalist, singer, lyricist, musician, filmmaker, writer and politician.
