Bhubaneswar Kalita richest candidate in 2nd phase polls in State

GUWAHATI, April 17 - Congress candidate from Mangaldoi, Bhubaneswar Kalita is the richest among the 50 candidates in fray in the Phase II of Lok Sabha elections in the State.

With assets of Rs 12.66 crore, 67-year-old Kalita, also an advocate, is among the 11 candidates who are crorepatis, according to an analysis of the affidavits by Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

There are four candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of these, three have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

The average asset per candidate contesting in the Lok Sabha Phase II elections from Assam is Rs 1.26 crore.

There are 18 candidates who have declared liabilities. There are only two female candidates contesting in Lok Sabha Phase II elections from Assam.

Twenty three of the candidates are undergraduates.

Among the crorepatis are Congress� Silchar candidate Sushmita Dev (assets of Rs 10.67 crore), Congress� Nagaon candidate Pradyut Bordoloi (Rs 7.41 crore), BJP�s Nagaon candidate Rupak Sharma (Rs 6.27 crore), ASDC candidate from Autonomous District Holiram Terang (Rs 5.37 crore), BJP�s Silchar candidate Rajdeep Roy (Rs 2.99 crore), BJP�s Autonomous District candidate Horen Sing Bey (Rs 2.06 crore), independent candidate from Mangaldoi Kazi Nekib Ahmed (Rs 1.70 crore), AIUDF�s Karimganj candidate Radheshyam Biswas (Rs 1.21 crore), NPP�s Silchar candidate Nazia Yasmin Mazumdar (Rs 1.11 crore) and Bharatiya Gana Parishad�s Mangaldoi candidate Biren Basak (Rs 1.02 crore).

BJP candidate from Autonomous District Horen Sing Bey has declared two criminal cases against him, which have twelve serious IPC sections, including murder, kidnapping and waging a war against the government.

AITC candidate from Nagaon Sahadev Das also has a criminal case with five serious IPC sections, including rioting and attempt to murder. Congress candidate from Karimganj Swarup Das has a pending criminal case which relates to buying or disposing of a person as slave.

The affidavit of one candidate � Jones Ingti Kathar (Autonomous District) � has not been analysed due to the unavailability of his complete affidavit on the ECI website.
