DOOMDOOMA, Jan 16 - Amidst protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the people of Doomdooma along with the rest of the state celebrated Bhogali Bihu, but the enthusiasm and merriment seen in the previous years were absent from the celebration this time.
The Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha (DSSS), Doomdooma regional committees of the AASU and AJYCP, the Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee of the Doomdooma Rajahuwa Rongali Bihu in association with various ethnic organisations jointly celebrated Bihu at the DSSS Bhawan premises.
On Wednesday morning, social activist Dharmakanta Gogoi lit the meji and expressed hope that the fire of the meji would destroy all evils from the society and also the current crisis that has gripped lives in Assam. People vowed in front of the fire of the meji to continue their agitation against the CAA and they burnt dummy copies of the controversial Act in the meji.
DSSS secretary Deben Deka, AASU Tinsukia district committee assistant secretary Rana Sonar, AJYCP Tinsukia district committee joint secretary Tomal Gupta, Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha president Arjun Baruah, DSSS president Bimala Baruah were also present.
Our Nalbari Correspondent adds: In response to the call given by the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), the people of Nalbari district burnt copies of the CAA in the fire of the meji in various parts of Nalbari district on Wednesday.
A press release issued by the Nalbari district unit of the AASU said that people of Nalbari town, Ghagrapar, Barajol, Alliya, Khatikuchi, Dhamdhama, Barbhag, Baharghat, Balitara, Kendukuchi, Barama, Tihu, Nambarbhag, Khetri Dharmapur, Uttar Dharmapur, Chamata, Bahjani, Morowa and Pokowa protested against the implementation of CAA by burning its copies at the meji. The women folk of Udaypur and Shantipur areas also burnt copies of the Act and raised slogans against the BJP governments for its �double standards�.
AASU Nalbari district unit president Gunajyoti Pathak and secretary Akshay Deka and central executive member Bhabajit Bezbaruah also burnt copies of the Act.
Our Dhemaji Correspondent adds: Amidst the ongoing agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the people of Dhemaji district celebrated Bhogali Bihu with enthusiasm, but also protested against the legislation.
Activists of the AASU, AJYCP and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) burnt copies of the CAA in the fire of the mejis on Wednesday. They also shouted anti-government slogans for enforcing the CAA and undermining the mass protests against it.
AASU and AJYCP activists waved black flags in front of the Dhemaji Police Station as the DC and SP�s offices on Tuesday as a mark of protest against the CAA.
KMSS members along with local people staged a two-hour sit-in demonstration in front of the Jonai SDO�s office on Tuesday, demanding scrapping of the CAA and also the release of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi who is in judicial custody.
