Bhaskarjyoti puts Guwahati in comfort zone

GUWAHATI, March 23 � A brilliant display of spin bowling by south paw Bhaskarjyoti Barman put Guwahati in a comfortable position against Silchar in the Elite Group Senior Inter District Cricket Championship for the Nurruddin Ahmed Trophy.

On the second day of the four-day semifinal at the Nehru Stadium here today, in reply to Guwahati�s first innings total of 250, Silchar were all out for 128 conceding a first innings lead of 122 runs. In the second innings, Guwahati were 119 for the loss of one wicket when stumps were drawn for the day. Rishab Das and Gokul Sharma were at the crease with 57 and 50 respectively.

Bhaskarjyoti wrecked the first innings of the visiting team with a rich six-wicket haul while Bitop Mahanta and Gokul Sharma capturing two wickets each.

Bhaskarjyoti sent down 36 overs out of which seven were maiden and conceded 36 runs. The spin-friendly track provided ample support to the Guwahati bowlers and all the wickets fell to the guile of spinners.

For Silchar, Biswajit Bhattacharjee was the top scorer with 33, while Samik Das (17) and Pritam Das (14) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Guwahati received an early jolt in the second knock as it lost opener and first innings centurion Abhijit Singha Roy for 4 and other opener Rahul Hazarika was retired hurt. But the Rishab-Gokul partnership gave the local team stability as both the batsmen were seen to be quite comfortable against all the Silchar bowlers.
