GUWAHATI, Aug 22 - After exactly 22 years and 22 days of the sensational Karabi-Dubori murder case, the Court of District and Sessions Judge, Kamrup (Metro) today acquitted businessman Bhagya Kalita and his driver Fatiur Ali of all charges due to lack of evidence.

The court before pronouncing the judgement maintained that the prosecution could not come up with evidence against the accused duo.

Unidentified miscreants shot dead Karabi Das and her minor daughter Dubori Das at their residence at Ambari here on July 31, 1995 creating a huge public outcry. Although, initially a case was registered with the Latasil police station, the case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the intervention of the Gauhati High Court.

The countrys premier investigating agency, which registered the case on November 6, 1995, filed the chargesheet on October 7, 1998 naming Bhagya Kalita, Fatiur Ali and Bhupen Medhi as accused. The trial began the very next year. Medhi, ever since the murder, could not be traced.

Recording of evidence began in 2001 and over 50 witnesses, including Karabis son Anghsuman and her housemaid Manju, were examined during the course of the trial. Lawyers representing Kalita said the prosecution could not come up with even the slightest evidence against the accused.
