BGB rules out ISIS, ISI presence in Bangladesh

By Prabir sil

AGARTALA, July 27 - Although Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) ruled out presence of ISIS or ISI in its soil even after growing activities of fundamentalist groups, it has decided to construct 35 Border Outposts (BOPs) along the Indo-Bangla border, official sources confirmed here on Wednesday.

Recent attack at Dhakas Gulshan area was the handiwork of locally groomed miscreants or Jihadis who might have not been associated with foreign terror groups, said BGBs Addl Director General Md Habibul Karim.

The Bangladesh Government is capable of handling threats either from internal nor external forces. The recent crack down on the fundamentalists or anti-nationalist forces show Bangladesh Government is determined to uproot such terrorist groups, he said.

Altogether 50 BOPs are operational along the Indo-Bangla border while six BOPs would be erected in most inaccessible locations by using the roads of Indian side, said Md Karim.

At a joint press conference in the BSF, Tripura Frontier headquarters at Salbagan here, he said, for the past 40 years there was no presence of BGB along South-East region of Bangladesh, bordering Tripura and Mizoram.

The move to construct new BOPs has been initiated keeping in mind of global security scenario and growing security threat. We want to ensure fool-proof security along the border, he said.

Md Karim said the Bangladesh Government has decided to erect fencing along Bangladesh-Myanmar border spreading over 400 km so international border could be managed effectively.

On the outcome of four-day BSF-BGB regional meet, Md Karim said, We have discussed a lot of issues of mutual concern. Issues like trans-border crimes, cattle lifting and theft have been reduced drastically due to mutual cooperation between border guards of both sides.

BSF IG Meghalaya Frontier PK Dubey said the regional level meeting was held in a most cordial atmosphere. We have discussed various issues on how to strengthen border security in better way and vowed to work together for mutual benefits, Dubey, who led the BSF side in the meeting, told the media.

Besides other issues, border fencing along zero line also came up for discussion. Nine spots along the Indo-Bangla border are under BGBs consideration for zero-line fencing and five are from Tripura side, added he.
