KARIMGANJ, Sept 21 � Nivedita Nari Sanstha, an NGO based in Silchar, is engaged in the uplift of the socio-economic condition of downtrodden women. For its all-round socio-economic activities, Nivedita was awarded the Chief Minister�s Best Community Action Award recently. The award was handed over to Diba Roy, founder secretary.

Established in 1996 by Diba Roy, Nivedita Nari Sanstha has been playing a vital role in the field of education and health for poor women and children of the valley. The NGO runs an orphan adoption centre named Sishugriha with the financial aid provided by the Central Adoption Resource Authority under the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.

Nivedita received 28 children abandoned and rescued by the police and general public. Among the 28 children, the NGO has given 26 children for pre-placement foster care agreement through court and two children are still with the NGO. Nivedita also runs an Anganwadi training centre approved by the Social Welfare Department.

It is the only training centre in Barak Valley run by the NGO. The NGO runs four creches under the Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Programme under the Central Social Welfare Board.

Nivedita Nari Sanstha also runs a primary school and healthcare centre at Kanakpur in Silchar. The NGO assists the police administration by giving shelter to victim girls at the NGO centre. At present, there are six girls sent by the police through court order.
