DOOMDOOMA, Jan 21 - Bengali speaking people of Doomdooma under the aegis of Bangabhashi Asomiya Samaj, Doomdooma and Doomdooma Regional Committee of All Assam Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation brought out a torchlight rally through the tea town on Sunday evening to register their protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The protesters shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the BJP. The protesters subsequently held a meeting in front of Doomdooma Bangiya Durgabari. Addressing the gathering, Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha secretary Deben Deka urged all to remain alert against the divisive forces which had been trying to destroy the unity and integrity between the Bengali and the local people.
Debate contest: Earlier, the All Moran Students� Union (AMSU) in association with Doomdooma College organised the 4th Dihing Dohutia Memorial North East-Level Inter-College Debate Competition at Doomdooma College auditorium on Saturday.
This year�s topic of the competition was: �Only transfer of more power to the states will expedite development of the country�. Retired professor of Tinsukia College Dr Achyut Borthakur inaugurated the competition.
Eminent lawyer and intellectual of the state Arup Borbora decorated the chair of speaker during the competition. Altogether, 20 participants from different educational institutions across the North East participated in the competition.
Himakshi Thakuria of Tezpur University, Bishaldeep Kakoti of Gauhati University, Bijit Kalita of IMMS, Kalyanjyoti Kalita of APIIT and Moon Talukdar of Gauhati University secured the first five positions respectively.
The prize distribution ceremony which was held later in the day was chaired by AMSU president Arunjyoti Moran and attended by Arup Borbora, Doomdooma College Principal Dr Prakash Jyoti Borthakur and Dr Achyut Borthakur, besides the wife and son of late Dihing Dohutia.
Judges of the competition Pranjit Saikia, Utpal Kumar Dutta and R Kalita also attended the prize distribution ceremony. A souvenir published on the occasion was released by Arup Borbora.
Earlier, AMSU general secretary Naba Moran formally welcomed the guests.
