Bengali-medium schools observe Lachit Divas

GUWAHATI, Nov 24 - Lachit Divas was today observed at Paltan Bazar by the Lachit Divas Udjapan Samiti along with Bengali Higher Secondary School and Bengali High School.

After MP Queen Ojha and former MP Ramen Deka gave the observance an auspicious start by lighting the ceremonial lamp, an art competition was organised in different groups in which a large number of students participated.

The purpose of the programme was explained by Rajib Das. Sangita Devi welcomed the guests, students, teachers and others.

Queen Ojha, in her speech as the chief guest, talked about Lachit�s sacrifice and patriotism and appealed to the people, particularly the youth, to take the responsibility of nation building selflessly. In his speech, guest of honour Deka also said Mughal armies failed to capture Assam due to the bravery of Lachit. Another speaker, Shibani Dutta, termed Lachit as a national hero.

At the end of the meeting, vote of thanks was offered on behalf of the committee by Sankar Chakraborty, who acknowledged the services of some active members.

The meeting was presided over by Debashish Sengupta, president of the committee. This was stated in a press release issued here today.
