PATACHARKUCHI, July 6 - The people of a remote village under the Bajali subdivision in Barpeta district have chosen paper bags instead of polythene bags to carry grocery and other items. The initiative taken by the people of Belona village will definitely become an example for others for saving environment and reducing pollution caused by plastic.

Belona is also perhaps the only village in the State which has taken such a unique initiative to protect the environment.

In view of this initiative, a self-help group Maa Durga started producing paper bags in the village and distributing the same among the people of the village and the surrounding areas.

This unique initiative was taken by the Forest and Environment department. The officials held a number of meetings in the village in order to make the people aware of the same.

Jitu Roy, one of the youths of the locality, told this reporter that three self-help groups have already started making paper bags so that people change their habit of using polythene bags and save the earth from plastic pollution.

The villagers have also started keeping dustbins in front of their houses to keep the village clean.
