Baukhungri festival kicked off in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 12 - The 6th Baukhungri festival began here on Wednesday with a four-day programme at Harinaguri.

BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary, who is also in-charge of the Tourism department, inaugurated the festival in the presence of a large number of visitors and invited guests.

People thronged the festival for different adventure sports like paragliding, indigenous games like khomlainai (Bodo wrestling) and for traditional cuisines from all over the region.

The organising committee said that the BTC authorities organize the Baokhungri festival every year at the venue with an aim to make it more attractive and to make a proper roadmap for Baokhungri hill to enlist it as a tourist spot.

It may be mentioned here that the Bodos traditionally celebrate the festival as Baukhungri Hajw Gakhwnai (Climbing of Baukhungri Hill) on the last day of Choitra month (April 14). Baukhungri festival is a national festival of Bodoland region, especially on the eve of Bwisagu where people from all walks of life participate with great enthusiasm.

Baukhungri itself has a proud history with beautiful natural environment. Tourists come from various parts of�the State as well as the country, besides from neighbouring Bhutan and other countries during the festival and enjoy. A multi-community cultural demonstration was also organised on the day to mark the celebration of the festival. BTC Executive Members Doneswar Goyary, BTC Principal Secretary BC Phukan, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Niranjan Baruah, among others, attended on the first day of the festival.
