Baukhungri festival kicked off at Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 13 - The 5th Baukhungri festival was kicked off on Wednesday with a three-day-long programme scheduled at Harinaguri, the foothills of Baukhungri Hill just 10 km east of Kokrajhar town.

BTC Deputy Chief Kampa Borgoyary, who is also in-charge of Tourism department, inaugurated the festival in the presence of a large number of visitors and local public. It may be mentioned that the festival has been organised by the Tourism department, BTC on the eve of Bwisagu Bwtwr.

The festival beside various cultural programmes will include adventure sports like para-gliding, indigenous games like khomlainai (Bodo wrestling) and traditional cuisine from all over the region.

It may be mentioned here that the Bodos traditionally celebrated the festival as Baukhungri Hajw Gakhwnai (climbing of Baukhungri Hill) on the last day of Choitra month (April 13).

Baukhungri festival is a national festival of Bodoland region held especially on the eve of Bwisagu, where people from all walks of life participate with great enthusiasm.

Baukhungri itself has a historical past based on its beautiful scenic look. Tourists come from various parts of the State and the nation, besides from neighbouring Bhutan during the festival and enjoy the festive spirit.

A multi-community cultural rally was also organised on the day to mark the celebration of the festival. BTC Executive Members Rajib Brahma, BTC Principal Secretary BC Phukan, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner B Choudhury, among others, attended the first day of the festival.
