Baukhungri festival begins in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 12 - The seventh Baukhungri festival began today with a three-day-long programme at Harinaguri, on the foothills of Baukhungri Hill, just 10 km east of Kokrajhar town.

BTC Principal Secretary BC Phukan inaugurated the festival in the presence of a large number of visitors and public on the first day. The festival has been organised by the Tourism department, BTC on the eve of Bwisagu Bwtwr.

Different adventure sports like paragliding, indigenous games like khomlainai (Bodo wrestling) and traditional cuisine from all over the region are part of the festival.

It may be mentioned here that the Bodos traditionally celebrate the festival as Baukhungri Hajw Gakhwnai (climbing of Baukhungri Hill) on the last day of Chaitra month. Baukhungri festival is a national festival of Bodoland region, especially on the eve of Bwisagu where people from all walks of life participate with great enthusiasm. Tourists come from various parts of the State as well as the country, besides from neighbouring Bhutan during the festival.

A multi-community cultural demonstration was also organised on the day to mark the celebration of the festival.
