Batsmen let Assam down

GUWAHATI, Oct 14 � Assam suffered 12-run defeat at the hands of Orissa in their Elite Group CK Naidu Trophy U-22 cricket tournament.

It was shameful attitude on part of Assam batsmen as requiring 99 runs in the second innings for an outright victory, the host team was bundled out for 86 in just 26 overs on the final day of the four-day match at NF Railway Stadium, Maligaon today.

Resuming at the overnight total of 5 for 32, the host batsmen could add another 54 runs with remaining five wickets. Only three of Assam batsmen, Arminder Singh Oberoi (18), Pritam Das (15) and Sarupam Purkayastha (13) could reach double figure. Orissa speedsters Alok Sahu (4/28) and Alok Mangaraj (4/37) destroyed Assam innings.

Sarupam dropped: Assam skipper Sarupam Purkayastha has been dropped from the squad as per the reports of the selection committee, informed Assam Cricket Association secretary Bikash Baruah. The ACA secretary said Sarupam�s commitment towards the team was not satisfactory and considering his attitude he was dropped from the squad for the match against Bengal which is scheduled to be played at Kolkata from October 18. Rishab Das has been appointed as the captain of the team and Sunil Ranjan Gogoi is included in the squad, informed Baruah.
