Basic amenities lacking in Indo-Bangla border

By CORRESPONDENT

KARIMGANJ, Dec 25 Since Independence, Balia Khasia and Manipuri Basti near Madanpur TE along the Indo-Bangladesh border under Karimganj district are facing a lot of problems. Fifteen km away from the district headquarters, the tribal people have remained deprived of the basic amenities. Lack of road communication, pure drinking water, health, education and electricity have made the lives of 500 Khasi families miserable. Besides the Khasi community, Manipuri and Garo people live in Balia Khasia and Manipuri Basti are also facing the same problems for the last many years.

Venerable citizens of the area, Elizabeth Khasia and Hilly Khasia expressed concern about the performances of the elected representatives of the North Karimganj constituency, and said that due to the negligence of the district administration and political parties, not a single IAY project has been sanctioned to the residents of these backward tribal villages.

In order to maintain the law-and-order situation of the two villages, people have constituted a village body which has elected the Khasi, Manipuri and Garo as ministers who control the society, disclosed Hilly Khasia. Jhum cultivation is the main profession, mentioned Khasia. As there is no electricity, the villagers are compelled to purchase kerosene oil at high prices from the black market.

Recently, the secretary of DDC Dipankar Ghosh met the Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj and apprised him of the real picture of Balia Khasia and Manipuri Basti areas. He demanded immediate solutions to the problems of the tribal people.
