Barpeta dist bandh passes off peacefully

By Correspondent

BARPETA, Oct 15 - The BJP-backed 12-hour bandh from 5 am to 5 pm was observed across the Barpeta district on Wednesday.

The bandh passed off peacefully without any major incident of violence. The bandh was called in protest against throwing of a dissected head of a slaughtered cow in the alatar of Madan Gosai Than at Banglipara near Bhabanipur and the police atrocities on the party workers who gathered there to demand arrest of the culprits involved in the crime.

A press release issued by Bhagaban Bharali, president of the partys district committee, alleged that the police have harassed and arrested those who have demanded the arrest of the culprits in stead of finding a solution by identifying and arresting them. They demanded unconditional release of those party workers arrested by the police.

The effect of the bandh was partial in the district. The BJP party workers blocked roads in several parts of the district. However, a few party workers were allegedly manhandled by some anti-bandh groups when they tried to close shops and block roads at Barpeta Colony Bazar.

The police arrested nearly hundred bandh supporters from different parts of the district as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police, Shiladitya Chetia, told this correspondent that the team of police investigating the case has made some important head ways in this regard.

He said that they would be able to arrest the culprits within a day or two and the entire episode would come to light.
