UDALGURI, Jan 12 - We never expected that such a situation would arise in Assam. It is unwarranted and unexpected. The government should respect the popular sentiment. The Asam Sahitya Sabha therefore appeals to the BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary to come forward and help pacify the present burning situation in the state.
The above was observed by Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, president of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Addressing an assembly of literary figures, artistes and common people of Udalguri town as the chief guest of the Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika statue-unveiling ceremony held at the Sahitya Sabha Bhawan premises here, Dr Rajbongshi also expressed dissatisfaction over the present fund crisis and delay by the state government in expediting pending payment.
Addressing those present on the occasion, BTC chief Mohilary said that the BTC authority was committeed to all- round development of the region.
�Though we are now driving the tempo of development with a number of schemes, yet there is still a lot to do to fulfil the popular aspirations,� he said.
He assured to instal three statues of Sudhakantha in three districts of BTAD, namely Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa.
The occasion was also addressed by noted artiste and sculptor Biren Singha, who is credited with making the full-size statue of the singing icon.
The meeting was also attended by Samar Hazarika, younger brother of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Emmanuel Mochahary, MLA of Tamulpur LAC, Charan Boro of Mazbat LAC Ripen Daimari, MCLA of Bhairabkunda constituency Dilip Kumar Das, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district, among many others. Cabinet minister Rihon Daimari released a souvenir brought out on the occasion.
Earlier, Hagrama Mohilary inaugurated the newly-constructed two-storeyed Gorkha hostel in the heart of Udalguri town and laid the hi-tech business centre worth Rs 18.59 crore at Udalguri daily market area of the town.
Later, Mohilary also attended a function held at the site of the 7th Bhairabkunda Tourism Festival as chief guest and detailed the BTC government�s commitment to develop all the tourist destinations of the region within a very short time.
