Barak Valley Tribal Council leader shot dead

SILCHAR, July 10 � Babul Rongmai, chairman of Barak Valley Hills Tribal Development Council, was shot dead by three miscreants around 7.30 this morning at his residence of Sabhaspur under Ghungoor police station.

The miscreants, who came on a motorbike, shot Rongmai in his forehead from point-blank range killing him on the spot.

The miscreants then tried to flee from the spot but the local people caught one of them. Bappi Rongmai, brother-in-law of Babul Rongmai, received bullet injuries as he tried to intercept the miscreants. He has been admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital.

On the other hand, the local people had mercilessly beaten up caught the miscreant who was taken to the Silchar Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, where after a few hours of struggle, he was declared dead.

It may be noted that Babul Rongmai was young and energetic leader who did a lot of development work for the tribal community, especially for the Rongmai Naga community.

The Police so far has not been able to identify the miscreants including the one lynched by the local people. The police has recovered an American pistol and a mobile phone from the spot.

Babul Rongmai leaves behind his wife and a five-year-old daughter.
