SILCHAR, Dec 14 A Run for Unity will be held here on Sunday, to commemorate the death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Advocate Anil Chandra Dey, a member of the 16-member Cachar district committee of the Statue of Unity Movement told mediapersons on Friday that the event would coincide with the nationwide marathon.

Around 1,000 people are expected to participate in the run, which will start at Netaji Subhash Rotary and pass through the prime streets of the city before culminating at the statue of Dr Shyama Prasad Mookherjee in Shillong Patty.

Swami Mrinmayanandaji Maharaj of the Bharat Sevasram Sangha will inaugurate the run, Dey said. The 182-metre monument, which will be made with sand and metals collected from farmers across 6,50,000 villages in the country, will be the tallest in the world, informed Rupam Saha, the Cachar district coordinator of the Statue of Unity Movement. He added that this run will be held in seven districts in Assam, including Cachar and Karimganj.

The event has been organised by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust and some civil society organisations. These organisations will also hold awareness programmes on the contributions made by Sardar Patel, Saha added.
