Barak valley to get 2 new rice variants

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 8 - Since the Barak valley is prone to periodical flash floods, etc., during the monsoon season, two rice varieties Ranjit Sub-1 and Bahadur Sub-1 have been developed by researchers at Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat to get better yields under submerged conditions.

Dr Bishnu Prasad Baruah, chief scientist at the Regional Agricultural Research Station at Akbarpur in Karimganj told The Assam Tribune that it is ideally suited for khariff season in the Barak valley.

These new rice variants are improvement of the Ranjit and Bahadur varieties which the farmers of the Barak valley have been using for years. An additional gene has been incorporated in the new variants which ensures productivity even if the crops remain submerged during flash floods, Dr Baruah said.
