Barak bandh passes off peacefully at Badarpur

BADARPUR, Sept 29 - The 12-hour Barak bandh called by the BJP passed off peacefully at Badarpur, Karimganj and several other places of Karimganj district. The BJP workers were protesting against the detention of six BJP leaders, including the Silchar BJP MLA Dilip Paul.

All government and non-government offices, Railways, schools and colleges and other educational institutions and markets were closed for a day affecting the normal lives. Vehicles were also off the roads during the bandh.

Heavy police force was deployed to avoid any violence. However, a protest rally was taken out by a group of minority community against the Silchar MLA and other BJP leaders and burnt an effigy of the MLA.

The BJP sources said that the party has lodged an FIR against the Cachar Superintendent of Police, Rajveer Singh, for his alleged illegal and unlawful activities. The party also demanded immediate transfer of Singh and a judicial probe into the incident.

According to official sources, the police arrested a large numbers of protesters from Badarpur, Karimganj and other places of the district during the bandh.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), SN Singh, was in Silchar to take stock of the situation.
