Bar council rules for advocates

GUWAHATI, Dec 23 � As per the Bar Council of India Certificate of Practice and Renewal Rules 2014 published in the Gazette of India dated October 30, 2014, advocates who were enrolled before the year 2009-10 will need to apply for issuance of a certificate of practice to their respective State Bar Council in the form prescribed along with necessary documents and fee within a period of six months from the date of publication of the Rule in the Gazette.

Under the Rules, the Council is required to prepare two lists � one is for practicing advocates and another list of defaulting advocates and subsequently to publish a list of non practicing advocates.

The advocates who were issued the certificate of practice will be placed in the list of practicing advocates and they will only be entitled to practice law and others will not be entitled to practice. The certificate of practice issued under these Rules as well as under the All India Bar Examination Rules to the advocates enrolled after 2009-10 are made renewable every five years.
