Bar Council condemns attack on Tribunal member

GUWAHATI, March 3 - Condemning the attack on the member of a Foreigners Tribunal in Goalpara district, the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim has decided to suspend the enrolment certificates of the ten advocates involved in the incident and restrain them from carrying out their legal practice till the matter is thoroughly heard in the next meeting of the council.

The Bar Council said that it was first such incident in the NE region, where advocates entered into the chamber of a judicial officer and attacked him being dissatisfied with the findings or reports given by him in discharge of his official duty.

�The council has taken a serious note of the incident and is contemplating on taking serious action against the advocates allegedly involved in the despicable act. It is a very serious incident having far-reaching consequences and is definitely interference in administration of justice. In such circumstances, this council prima facie finds that it is a fit case to issue notice to the accused advocates seeking their comment,� a statement from the Bar Council said.

The council has also sought reports from the Goalpara District Bar Association and Goalpara Lawyers� Association regarding the incident. The matter will be considered after receiving the reports from the Bar associations concerned and other persons in the next meeting of the Council.
