NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 24 - The bank protection work on the Bhimpora embankment of Subansiri river in Lakhimpur district received a severe blow as a major portion of the laid geo-bags has been eroded in the floods. The bank protection work by the State Water Resources Department on a stretch of 1400 metres on the Bhimpora embankment of Subansiri under Kadam Revenue Circle in Hekerajan, Lakhimpur was damaged due to rising water in the river on Tuesday afternoon.

The NABARD sponsored Rs seven-crore bank protection work of laying geo-bags and geo-carpeting on Bhimpora embankment on the right hand side of Subansiri was supposed to be started in 2018 but it began from late February this year and has been halted since the river began to swell. The rising water of Subansiri washed away several geo-bags and geo-carpets at different portions of the Bhimpora embankment in Hekerajan. The Lakhimpur distrct WRD has laid some tree trunks in a bid to save the ongoing work on the river embankment in Hekerajan following the loss of the geo-bags and geo-carpets.

Meanwhile, erosion by Dirgha river in nearby Bogeenadi has threatened a green cover area of plantation by the Soil Conservation Department. The erosion by the river has already taken away more than 30 trees of Khair and Sishu plantations. A portion of the playground of Lalpani High School has also been eroded by the same river near Bogeenadi.
