Bank manager, sanitation worker arrested at Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, Oct 16 - The branch manager and a sanitation worker of Hailakandi district�s Manipur branch of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank were arrested today in connection with the disappearing of millions of rupees from the accounts of customers of the bank.

The officer-in-charge of Katlicherra police station, Nirmal Kanti Biswas confirmed the arrest of duo and said that the interrogation is on. The Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Keerthi Jalli and the SP, Pabindra Kumar Nath visited the bank and assured the agitated customers that they will take steps for the recovery of the lost amount.

OC Biswas said that the branch manager Maniram Chauhan and sanitation worker Surya Dhar were arrested today and Chauhan was produced in the court but Dhar could not be produced due to his physical deformity. Dhar has been kept in house with police security.

The irate customers locked the bank on Tuesday evening after getting scent of the disappearance of money from their accounts.

A large number police and CRPF personnel have been deployed on the bank premises.

The matter came into light when the headmaster of Manipur High School, Khagendra Roy came to the bank for the withdrawal of his fixed deposit amount after maturity. The manager allegedly replied that there was no money in his account for payment and the certificate he produced is also fake. After this news spread, a large number of customers gheraoed the manager who said that their certificates are fake.
