GUWAHATI, June 29 - The State government�s decision to keep only 10 per cent of the banks open in Guwahati during the 14-day lockdown, which began last night, is set to hit the salaried class.
Salaries in almost all firms and companies are disbursed before the 10th of every month.
The lockdown would remain in force till July 12.
Employees having salary accounts in the branches, which would remain closed during the lockdown, may not be able to receive their earnings.
The State Bank of India has decided to keep open six branches in the Kamrup Metro district for its customers. Other banks also are keeping only a few of their branches open.
�We get a half-yearly allowance on June 30. However, many would not be able get the allowance on time because of the closure of the banks. Our salary is also due in the first week. A similar problem would be there again,� said an employee of a private firm.
Salaries of almost all private employees in the city are transferred to their bank accounts.
Bank officials admitted that sections of private employees would have problems in getting their salaries, due to the closure of 90 per cent of the branches.
Official sources said that despite the closure, government employees are likely to get their salaries on time.
�There is a centralised fund management system. There wouldn�t be any issues for salary disbursement,� a senior government official said.
