By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, Dec 21 Members of the ailing Assamese film industry has thrown its weight behind the proposed concept to rope in Bangladeshi production houses for co-producing movies in the State.

This comes after the commercial counsellor of Bangladeshi High Commission, New Delhi, Md Habibur Rahman Khan while reacting to the feasibility of the move today said that the concept of bringing in film producers of Bangladesh for co-production of movies in the State looks good and we are trying to work on the issue.

Munin Baruah, national award-winning filmmaker believes, The idea of co-production sounds really encouraging for our industry. The market for our movie is very limited and this would inject the much-needed boost to the industry.

The leading filmmaker however stated that such bilingual movies, as and when made, would have to be made in double-shot to give a genuine look to the characters.

Bengal has a good market and such movies are viewed extensively in Bangaldesh too, which would further widen the ambit. In fact, my next movie Ramdhenu is also likely to be dubbed in Bengali, though things are yet to be finalized, said Baruah while talking to The Assam Tribune.

He also referred to prominent filmmaker Shakti Samant gave some smash hit films made both in Bengali and Hindi during the 70s.

It is not only about movie halls in the Bengal industry. There are so many movie channels lined up to buy movies that it has become quite lucrative as well, he pointed out.

Actor Raag Oinitom feels, This should be able to take the regional film industry to the next level. There is no better medium to convey your message than movies.

Veteran actor Nipon Goswami, while expressing happiness on the proposed move, commented: If anything such happens, Assamese film industry would be benefited from all sides. It apart from enhancing our market value would give way to quality productions.

It needs mention here that popular singer Zubeen Gargs next movie as an actor titled U Are Not My Julie is also a bilingual (Assamese and Bengali) movie and is slated to get released next year.

Earlier today the commercial counsellor of Bangladeshi High Commission, stated: At this moment, things are in a planning stage and decision would be taken after discussing the issue with the persons concerned, Khan stated.

Rajesh Das, vice president, Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam had earlier revealed that a plan to organize an interaction with the representatives of the Bangladeshi film production houses and the members of the regional film industry will be organised to work on the feasibility of the co-production concept.
